This week we discuss Kline’s article from the mid 1990s called Covenant Theology Under Attack. First, we talk about Kline’s critique of Daniel Fuller. Fuller rejected the idea that God ever related to people on the basis of a works principle. Fuller argued that human obedience could not add to God’s glory. Here, he appealed to Luke 17:10, like many Reformed theologians. Like the authors of Merit & Moses, Fuller also used a speculative, ontological analysis to argue that any reward God might have given Adam would have far exceeded the value of Adam’s obedience. Next, Kline focuses his critique on John Murray because Murray restricted the definition of covenant to involve only the principle of grace. Finally, Kline critiques Murray’s student and successor, Norman Shepherd because Shepherd followed Murray’s covenant theology to its logical conclusion, and Shepherd denied the imputation of the active obedience of Christ to believers.

This is the last episode about Kingdom Prologue. First, Jesus was incarnate as an ordinary man at his first coming, and he will be dazzlingly bright at his second coming. Next, in the same way, the second person of the Trinity made appearances in the Old Testament. At first, he would come as the angel of the Lord, but appear to people as an ordinary man. But after an episode of judgment, he would appear as the pillars of fire and smoke. Other times, he would appear as the bright glory-cloud after judgment. Finally, the good news is that we do not have to build a ladder to get up to God. God has come down to us in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son.

Meredith Kline was very critical of Dispensationalism. This week, Todd and Chris discuss Dispensationalism compared with covenant theology or biblical theology. First, we talk about how Dispensationalists interpret the Bible. Next, we talk about how Dispensationalists understand types and their fulfillment. Finally, we talk about how Dispensationalism is at odds with the gospel. We also talk about the millennium.
