This week we begin our new series, working through Meredith Kline’s next book: Images of the Spirit. As we began to prepare for this, we realized that it would simply be too much for us and for our listeners if we attempted to cover the entire chapter in one episode. So this is part one of chapter one. Pick up a copy of Images of the Spirit and work through this with us as we go through this series!

The Gospels are a unique genre because they record that time when God took human nature to himself and lived among us, right? Well, maybe not. Yes, the incarnation was a completely unique event, but the Gospel genre has its origins in the Old Testament. Tune in for this exciting episode!

This is a bit of a lesson in hermeneutics (or, how to read the Bible). We wanted to make it practical, so we chose a topic (immigration) that is filling the headlines and provoking comment from Christians and church bodies across the theological spectrum. However, almost no one who is chiming in is considering carefully enough the context of the biblical passages they are using. Lee and Chris want to use this as an opportunity to talk about the point of the Bible, how we should read it, and the consequences of misreading it.

Have you ever heard someone describe Israel’s conquest of the Canaanites as genocide or some other form of completely unjust war? Meredith Kline understood what Israel did in a very unique way. Lee and Chris think that Kline’s understanding of the Canaanite Conquest has helpful implications for defending the Christian faith against attacks regarding this particular episode in covenant history.

In this episode, Chris Caughey talks with Lutheran pastor Jordan Cooper about the influence Meredith Kline’s books had on him while he was still Reformed – and how they continue to influence him today. Part of what makes this conversation so interesting is the “language barrier” that exists in the way that different theological traditions use theological language. But Chris and Jordan handle the communication and translation respectfully.
